Switzerland is providing fully-funded Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2022 for international students. These scholarships are integral parts that are all based on the Government of Swiss international strategy for research, education, and innovation. The fully-funded scholarships 2022 in Switzerland are for post-Doc, master’s, and Ph.D. students from all over the world. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships 2022 are also giving opportunities for research that is available for self-motivated and ambitious Post-Doc and Ph.D. and students of arts. 

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

Selection Process for Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships

Applications are subject to preliminary selection by the relevant national authorities and/or the Swiss diplomatic representation. The short-listed applications are then assessed by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS), which takes the final decision.

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

Candidate profile

Quality of the research project or artistic work

Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS is composed of professors from all Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided based on academic and scientific excellence.


The FCS will announce its decisions regarding the new scholarship awards by the end of May at the latest.

Eligibility for Ph.D. Candidates

  • Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (MA necessary for candidates applying to ETH Zurich and the University of Basel) achieved before 31 July 2022.
  • Be born after 31 December 1986.
  • Provide a letter from an academic host professor (including her/his short CV) at the chosen Swiss university.
  • Have a research proposal including a timeframe. This is the centerpiece of the application.
  • Have not been in Switzerland for more than one year at the beginning of the scholarship in September 2022.
  • be in command of the necessary language skills required for Ph.D. studies/ research.
  • Move to Switzerland during their grant period.
